Is artificial light necessary for an effective tank setup? Or is it for aesthetic reasons?

I hardly even use the light on my Cray tank. and just scrape the glass once in a while and vacuum the gravel every week or just keep the lights off. I do most of the time, unless I am watching him. If you have fluorescent lights change to an incandescent. but beware incandescent gets pretty hot and can raise your water temp when left on for a while.
