, 'It''s been one of the hottest summers in recent history here. My tank temperature rose to 28 degrees celsius (that''s 82 fahrenheit) when the temperature outside was 38 degrees. I was alarmed... I got a great tip from an aquarium shop owner about how to reduce the temperature of the water gradually without contaminating it. I used this several times over the summer and it didn''t kill my crayfish.
Take a soda bottle (plastic) which a screw top. Fill it with water and freeze it. Once the water is completely frozen add it to the tank and leave it. As long as the cap is firmly on, the temperature should decrease while the bottle water remains inside. I used a Schweppes tonic bottle but you might have to use several bottles depending on the size of your tank.
My tank is at 22 degrees celsius (71 fahrenheit) at the moment.
