Disposing of dead crayfish

Disposing of dead crayfish

Postby Craw Chief » April 17th, 2013, 10:19 pm

OP:
'Dispose of a body?', 'I have a tank that has 3 small crayfish in it (sorry, not blue). One of which appears to have been murdered last night (he might''ve been molting, but since he still has a nice red shell, I wouldn''t think so). A claw on the other side of the tank, a shedded shell piece or two in random places...I am sure the crays will eat the shells for calcium, but what about dead crayfish? Will they eat the corpse, too, or should I remove it as soon as possible?

'A little update', 'Actually, now that I looked at another forum, I''m thinking maybe he wasn''t killed. Someone else in that forum said their cray randomly lost a claw then died soon after. It''s hard to believe the dead cray met that same fate, since he''s partially missing other limbs, too.

'One last update for now', 'Looks like the dead one is being nibbled at, as part of his shell now seems to have been ripped open. Also, I''ve positive that the one who killed him was, in addition, the one who''s molting, as every time someone walks past, he exits his cave aggresively, with his claws wiiide open. I still need to know what to do with the corpse, as I don''t know if it''ll dirty the tank

'i would take it out. better safe than sorry. it might be safe if it is a fresh kill. but if its been a day i say get it out before it rots

Remove the corpse and dispose of it. It will cause too many problems

'The body...RIP', 'The body has been removed. Thanks for your help!\n\nThe killer almost got in a fight with the other, but I stopped it and gave the nice on a chance to get away...I hope I won''t have to remove another body
